Competency Modeling

Strategic Success Modeling (SSM) or Competency Modeling

The competency modeling or SSM process helps to define competencies that are keys to success in your organization

A competency is a combination of the knowledge, skills, abilities and personal attributes that are necessary for success.

The “can do” – knowledge, skills, abilities

The “will do” – personal attributes which then lead to desired behaviours.

A competency model is a collection of competencies that have been defined to contribute to success either by job (role) or by level within an organization.

Competency models when integrated into Strategic HR processes provide benefits in the following areas:

  1. Selection
  2. Development and Training
  3. Succession Planning
  4. Performance Management
  5. Retention and In-Placement

Why Benefits are not Always Realized

  1. Inability to objectively measure the presence of competencies either for potential hires or internal employees
  2. Behaviours associated with competencies are not clearly articulated and are not communicated using a common language.
  3. There is no link between competencies and other developmental tools – assessment or 360 º Feedback
  4. There is no easy way to link training to developmental opportunities
  5. You have no way to generate group competency reports to determine the strengths and developmental needs for your teams.
